Sweden: Oriola making a long-term investment in Lean

It is necessary to think big to achieve real success with Lean, says Magnus Korsgren, Development Manager at Oriola, who has been working with the implementation of Lean program at the company for three years. The company focuses on four different plans: infrastructure, competence development, motivation, and leadership, all contributing equally to effective implementation of Lean. The increased need for constant improvement became especially clear after the deregulation of pharmacy market, which meant toughening of competition. Thus, Lean program was launched on a vast scale to send a clear signal on the importance of the new thinking and committing to constant improvement. Regarding the results, Magnus Korsgren says that as Lean is a long-term investment, the effect of each particular improvement is not calculated, however, on a larger scale, they evaluate the results on the basis of DMAIC. Also the number of implemented single improvements is closely monitored. Sweden: Better advice at pharmacies could save billions of crowns, says Kronans Apotek

In a debate article in the newspaper Barometern the representatives of Kronans Apotek write that the pharmacies should get better possibilities to provide advice. This could considerably decrease the costs of incorrect medicine use for the society, which currently is estimated to be SEK 20 bln.

Lars Birkeland, CEO at Kronans Apotek and Andreas Rosenlund, Informations Director, propose in the article that the government should conduct a survey that would find answer to questions such as how to increase pharmacies’ role in health care, and what could Sweden learn from the experience of other countries where pharmacies have been involved in providing health care services.

Sweden: Kronans Apotek launches new pharmacy concept

Kronans Apotek launched its new concept on May 23, re-opening a pharmacy on Renstiernas gata in Stockholm. The concept brings more focus on beauty products, aids and health food.

The increased focus on aids is implemented in cooperation with the supplier Enklare liv, whose products are now available at about 60 Kronans Apotek’s pharmacies. By the end of this summer their number will increase to 100.

Regarding health food, the pharmacy chain focuses on known brands and aims to increase their retail sales and thus also income, said Lars Birkeland, CEO at Kronans Apotek.

Sweden: Kronans Apotek wants increased consultations at pharmacies

Kronans Apotek has presented a new report “Apoteksmiljarden” where they advise the government to increase the pharmacies’ responsibilities in counselling patients on proper medicine use, similarly to the pharmacies in the UK. The pharmacy chain urges the government to organise an investigation on the possibilities of expanding pharmacies’ tasks and its possible benefits.

According to an example in the report, if all of the approximately 200 000 diabetics got additional consultations of 30 minutes, it would cost SEK 76 mln. But if the counselling would achieve that 100 of them avoid a stroke, the counselling would already have paid off. “We believe that this would turn out to be a more or less self-financing service in case the society would agree to make this investment,” says Andreas Rosenlund, Information Manager at Kronans Apotek.

Kronans Apotek informed Apoteksföreningen about this move, but did not communicate it with other players in the market, according to Andreas Rosenlund, who said they chose to present the proposal by themselves.

Oriola-KD greatly improves profit results

The operating profit without non-recurring items of Oriola-KD rose to EUR 8.1 million in January-March, 2014. Compared to the EUR 2.3 million in the corresponding period last year, the growth of operating profit was 250%. Turnover fell 3%, reaching EUR 593.9 million. The company estimates the turnover and profit without non-recurring items will continue increasing from the levels of 2013.

Eero Hautaniemi, the CEO of Oriola-KD, tells in the press release: „The strengthening of profitability in both our operation segments in Sweden added to the positive profit development. After purchasing Medstop in June 2013, we have established ourselves as the central operator in the Swedish pharmacy market: according to the company’s estimates, the market share of Kronans Apotek is 21%. In turn, the profitability of the Swedish wholesale operations was improved with the effectiveness optimization program we started in Q3 of 2013.”

The release also mentions the weakening economic situation and tight competition in Russia straining the company’s business in the Russian market at the beginning of the year. Oriola-KD has nonetheless intensified its operations in Russia and the project of the main logistics centre to be built in Moscow is proceeding according to the plan.

Sweden: Pharmacies want to get closer to health care

With the help of pharmacies the medicine-related problems can be reduced considerably, according to Kronans Apotek’s CEO Lars Birkeland and Communications Manager Andreas Rosenlund in a debate article in the Jönköping-Posten.

More than 50% of patients use their medicines incorrectly, and 6-16% of hospitalisations happen due to medicine-related problems. The debate article stresses that the pharmacies are doing a lot and could do even more in ensuring secure and effective medicine use. Thus, the responsibilities of the pharmacies should be increased and tied more closely with the health care services.

Sweden: Cheaper copies should be an option even for non-reimbursed medicines, says Kronans Apotek

Pricing of medicines not subject to reimbursement should be free and there should be a possibility to substitution with cheaper copies even in this segment, writes Andreas Rosenlund, Kronans Apotek’s Communication Director.

The number of non-reimbursed medicines is increasing, among them are medicines against impotence, cough and contraceptive pills. Kronans Apotek finds that customers need to be given the freedom to choose between alternatives in different price range. The legislation needs to be adjusted accordingly, writes Andreas Rosenlund. While hesitant about the state price database, Andreas Rosenlund welcomes the private database for these medicines, giving the private players such as Pricerunner and others the option to build up their own price comparison systems.

Sweden: Positive year for Oriola-KD in Sweden

Oriola-KD had a “very successful year” in Sweden in 2013, according to the annual report. For the first time, the group earned more money in Sweden than in Finland. The operating profit for the Swedish business did not include the non-recurring costs, EUR 26 mln in 2013, an increase of almost 62% compared to year 2012. On the group level, both sales and operating profit increased somewhat, but not as much as expected.

Active participation in transforming Sweden’s pharmaceutical market was one of the aims for the group last year. Last spring, Oriola-KD acquired pharmacy chain Medstop in Sweden and according to the group’s CEO Eero Hautaniemi, the merger has gone as planned. The aims for the year 2014 include completion of the integration of Medstop and Kronans Droghandel under the new name Kronans Apotek in the middle of the year.

Sweden: Name change to Kronans Apotek has been a success

Medstop and Kronans Droghandel merged under the new name Kronans Apotek while Doc Morris changed its name to Lloyds Apotek last year. Both chains say the name change has given positive results. Four years after the first private pharmacies appeared in the Swedish market, the pharmacies now face the challenge of differentiating themselves from the others.

Lloyds Apotek has now chosen to build up a brand specializing on skin care and pain management. The main reason behind the name change was considerably higher media costs, which increased from SEK 20 to SEK 50 mln.

For Kronans Apotek, introducing the new brand is one of the priorities of this year while before the name change the company’s media expenses decreased considerably, by a whole 57% to SEK 10 mln in 2013. The new and wider brand Kronans Apotek will cover even dietary and training supplements, skin care and beauty products, according to Marketing Manager Minna Dahlberg.

Sweden: Kronans Droghandel and Medstop become Kronans Apotek

On December 2nd, the pharmacy chains Kronans Droghandel and Medstop will become one company with a new common name, Kronans Apotek. Andreas Rosenlund, PR Director at Kronans Apotek, explained in an interview with Dagens Apotek that the name change of Kronans Droghandel had been under discussion for a longer time because of the possible wrong associations connected with the word ”droghandel” (drugstore). The merger seemed like a good opportunity to carry out the name change, says Andreas Rosenlund.

According to Oriola-KD, the synergy effects of the merger will help to save up to SEK 90 million. Andreas Rosenlund says the effectiveness will be increased in different ways, for example by creating one single service office and using common systems.

Sweden: The new Kronan will have a cooperative agreement

Merger between Kronans Droghandel and Medstop is approaching – on Monday, December 2, the two chains will join formally. Kronans Droghandel has up to now had no cooperative agreement; the new Kronans Apotek will have one as of Q2/2014 – a major improvement according to the Swedish Pharmacists’ Association’s professional union at Kronans Droghandel.

The cooperative agreement regulates the decision-making and negotiations on a local pharmacy level regarding changes that affect the staff and questions on working environment. The other merging pharmacy chain Medstop already has a union cooperative agreement, as well as the rest of the market leaders, Apoteket AB and Apotek Hjärtat (but not Apoteksgruppen).

Oriola-KD improved but Russia is still a problem

Oriola-KD's third quarter results improved compared to last year same period. The company was also able to substantially increase its sales. Operations in Russia, however, did not go so well. The Russian retail market continued to develop positively and made profit in January-September 2013 but results were significantly weakened by increased operating loss of the wholesale trade. Losses increased from EUR 5.3 million to EUR 8.8 million in January-September 2013.

Medstop and Kronans Droghandel are going to be integrated by the end of the year, Oriola-KD announces in its interim report. Integrating Medstop pharmacies is going according to the plan and they are going to be integrated with Kronans Droghandel during the last quarter of the year. The synergy effect of the merger between Medstop and Kronans Droghandel is expected to be between EUR 8 to 10 million annually as of year 2015.

Finland: Non-recurring items have led Oriola-KD to operating loss in Q2

The profit of Oriola-KD excluding non-recurring items has decreased to EUR 3.7 million from EUR 4.0 million last year. Including non-recurring items company witnessed a loss of EUR 0.3 million.

Profit per share amounted to EUR -0.02, while last year it was EUR 0.01. The Factset’s consensus was expecting EUR 0.02 profits per share, the expectations of analysts were varying between 0.01 and 0.03. The turnover increased to EUR 652.1 million in comparison to last year results of EUR 589.7 million, while the expectation for the turnover was 647 millions.

The company expects that net sales and operating profit excluding non-recurring items will increase this year from the 2012 level. The profit of wholesale and retail sales in Russia will be lower than last year.

Eero Hautaniemi, the CEO of Oriola-KD says in the official briefing: "In both Russia and Sweden, retail business posted higher operating profits, mainly due to more efficient operations and improved sales of OTC pharmaceuticals and traded goods. The second-quarter operating profit of the Swedish wholesale business improved according to plan as the operations of the purchasing and logistics services for the five pharmacy chains stabilized. The Group's operating profit for the first half of the year was significantly weakened by the increase in the operating loss of the Russian wholesale business. The operating loss increased as a result of delivery problems in the Moscow area which occurred after the implementation of the warehouse management system. Operations were stabilised at the main distribution centre in Moscow during the second quarter."

Finland: Oriola-KD's share in Russian market grows regardless of losses

The turnover of Oriola-KD in April-June period grew by 10.6%. The profit level improved in Finland and Sweden, but the results in Russia continued to weigh on the company's profit. The losses of wholesale and retail sales in Russia grew from EUR 2.2 million to 3.4 million.

In the beginning of the year pharmaceutical market in Russia grew by 15.6%. In ruble terms, Oriola-KD's retail sales in Russia grew by 5.7% in the January-June period. The wholesale sales grew by 10.1% during the same period.

CEO of Oriola-KD: The setbacks regarding the Russian market are temporary

Oriola-KD started to build its position in the Russian market about five years ago. The move is easy to understand if one takes a look at the growth forecasts. IMS Health predicts that the medicine market will increase only 0.3% during the next four years in Finland and 0.5% in Sweden, whereas in Russia 11% growth has been predicted. Last year the Russian market accounted for 39% of Oriola KD’s revenue.

Despite the good growth forecasts, Russia is not an easy market. In the first quarter of the year Oriola-KD experienced excessive IT troubles. There were problems in the launching of the new storage managing system and the company lost market share in the Moscow area, where margins are typically good.

"I believe that we can restore the lost market share in a few months", CEO Eero Hautaniemi says in an interview.

Sweden: Oriola AB starts using DB Schenker real-time temperature monitoring system

DB Schenker has introduced a monitoring system that allows following the temperature of delivered goods in real time via computer. „Our new monitoring system is a contribution that, among others, pharmaceutical industry sees as something very positive,“ said Mats Grundius, the Head od Division Land within Schenker AB. Russia: Stary Lekar and 03 nominated for HR-brand 2012 award for introducing customer service standards

The project on creating and introducing standards for customer service at the pharmacy chains Stary Lekar and 03 has been running already two years and now is nominated for the HR-brand 2012 award. The authors of the project highlight that the most important tasks - “painless” integration of both chains and increase in turnover – have been met during the implementation.

According to Elena Pakulicheva, HR manager at Oriola-KD, the year of 2010, when the project was initiated, was a very difficult time for pharmacies. The changes in taxation and the emergence of vital and essential medicines list with price restrictions made it difficult for pharmacies to profit and survive. The Stary Lekar and 03 were no exceptions. “One way to increase sales was to improve the service quality in pharmacies,” says Inara Korenevskaya, the training department manager at Oriola-KD. “At the time both chains had different corporative standards and it was necessary to create and introduce one standard of customer service for both chains,” she adds. The company set clear objectives, as well as rules for employees, highlighting what is to achieve and how each employee can be involved.

The general idea in creating the standards was the focus on customer’s needs and quality consultation rather than on the need of pure selling. The basis of the service standards was laid down by the patterns of behavior by most successful pharmacy employees, who repeatedly had shown excellent results. The introduction of new standards was tested in different pharmacies and the system was constantly improved. Since the start of the training of staff in April 2011, more than 1,000 employees had been trained, including pharmacy managers.

Elena Pakulicheva notes that the moment the standard introduction program was fully operational, the sales numbers increased significantly. In addition, the unified standards now allow rotating of the personnel between pharmacies freely, the transparent system has increased the loyalty of employees, and there was no need for the company to invest large sums in order to implement the project.

Although some pharmacies still need the improvement and the work on the introduction of standards is continuous, the level of service quality in Stary Lekar and 03 had been rising. According to Elena Pakulicheva, the company is very proud with the project as it had not only improved the connection with customers, but also has created a feeling of solidarity within the company.

Finland: Russia delays Oriola-KD's progress

Oriola-KD has had a silent beginning of the year. The company's profit has decreased in half compared with the Q1 of the last year. To blame are the problems with the warehouse management system in Russia as well as the procurement, storage and pharmacy distribution of non-prescription medicines in Sweden.

Oriola-KD promises the pace will pick up towards the end of the year and that the Group's turnover without the non-recurring items will increase from what it was in 2012. The company is doing well in the Nordics and Baltic states, but the problems in Russia still continue.

The company's gross profit in the January-March period was EUR 0.9 million, whereas a year earlier it was EUR 2.5 million. The profit per share decreased from EUR 0.01 to zero. The operation loss in Russia grew from EUR 1.1 million to EUR 3.6 million, whereas the business profit in Sweden and the Baltic states increased a little. The turnover of Oriola-KD was EUR 612.3 million compared to the EUR 590.8 million a year ago.

The operating profit of Oriola-KD decreased to EUR 2.3 million compared to the EUR 5.2 million in the January-March period the year before. The six analysts of Factset expected Oriola-KD to exceed EUR 6 million in business profit. Also the profit per share decreased to zero where it had been EUR 0.01 a year earlier and the analysts had expected it to be EUR 0.01-0.03.

The outlook is still the same: Oriola-KD expects both operating profit without non-recurring items and turnover to grow compared to 2012. While the growth of the turnover from both wholesale and retail business in Russia is expected to slow down in the first part of the year, the profit is expected to be weaker than the previous year due to problems related to the implementation of the warehouse management system started in January 2013.

We have no plans to close any pharmacies,” says CEO Lars Birkeland. The deal must be approved by the Competition Authority and the Medical Products Agency. If this happens, the two chains together will become the second largest chain in Sweden. Lars Birkeland thinks there will be further consolidation in the Swedish pharmacy market in the future.

Finland: Inderes cautiously positive in regard to Oriola-KD

Inderes has raised the target price of Oriola-KD´s shares to EUR 2,4 compared to the previous EUR 2,3. The recommendation for the share is still "to reduce".

"As a result of the struggles with the profitability during the last years the price of company’s share has decreased to very low in the quantity-based evaluation. The P/S figure showing the relation of market value and turnover is a very low 0,14. It means that even with a small improvement in profitability Oriola-KD has a good chance of marking a positive turn, Inderes states in the Nordnet review. Inderes points out that the other evaluation indicators are still overly high.

There are anyhow many prerequisites for the Oriola-KD´s profit growth according to Inderes: The founding of new pharmacies in Sweden should slow down and there should be consolidation in the market. The regulation issues in the pharmaceutical industry should not significantly weaken the industry’s profitability in the future. In Russia the operational risks connected with the large expansion projects of wholesale should be avoided.

Sweden: Oriola AB expands its distribution center in Enköping

Oriola AB is expanding its distribution center in Enköping. When it opens in January, the storage surface will be doubled, and it will be possible to extend it by additional 25% according to Claes Olsson, Logistics Manager at Oriola AB.

The reason for the extension is the deal that Oriola AB made with four pharmacy chains earlier last year. It was in May 2012 that Medstop, Apoteksgruppen, Doc Morris and Vårdapoteket jointly chose to shift their purchases of prescription drugs to Oriola AB.

Sweden: Oriola-KD plans to open more than 10 pharmacies in Sweden

Oriola-KD is planning to open more than 10 pharmacies next year in the Kronans Droghandel pharmacy chain, according to Dagens Industri. Kronans Droghandel finished last year with loss, but Joni Ihantola, Vice President Treasury and IR of Oriola-KD,  expects that this year will bring better results: "The Krona adds profitability and we can see that the sales are developing well."

The pharmacy competition in Sweden is tough. Ihantola sees that Oriola-KD’s strength is being the biggest industrial actor in the market, and the greatest challenges are in the development of the supply and being considered as an attractive employer.

Kronans Droghandel chain has 218 pharmacies in Sweden at the moment. Oriola-KD became the sole owner of the chain last week, when it bought the 20% minority share of Kronans Droghandel from its previous owner Kooperativa Förbundet ekonomisk föreningen for about EUR 12.3 million.

Sweden: Oriola-KD is prepared for the coming changes next year

As sole owner of Kronans Droghandel Oriola-KD has positioned itself well for the restructuring of the pharmacy market next year.

“Kronans Droghandel is actually the only company that as a concern is present in both wholesale and retail. Then it can be good to be the sole owner. It is always difficult to make quick decisions if one is in a business partnership,” says Åke Hallman, former president of the then state Apoteksbolaget and now a consultant at Samhällsinsikt.

He believes that Kronans Droghandel plans are to grow.
